Rethymno is the third largest Cretan town , inhabited by 30.000 people. It was built on the location of Ancient Rithymna. The Venetian conquerors enhanced the fortress which was built during Byzantine times. In the Old Town , the Venetian urban development plan is still preserved and the area is well known for being picturesque and for its landscapes. They can be found while exploring the intricate streets.
The biggest fortress of Crete,“Fortezza” is located in Rethymno close to the Venetian harbor with the lighthouse. The Venetian Loggia , the Rimondi Fountain,the Historical museum of Rethymno, the Neratze Mosque and other landscapes are also worth visiting.
Rethymno’s beach is long and sandy and its starting point is east of the harbor
Lake Kournas
Lake Kournas is located almost 2,5 km away from the coast and 4 km away from Georgioupoli.
. It is Crete’s only natural freshwater lake. It has rich flora and fauna and it is perfect for swimming.
Water biking is also an option.
Chania is the second largest Cretan town in population. It has preserved its traditional architecture , maintaining most of the landscapes since the Venetian and Ottoman era.It is considered to be one of the most ancient towns in Crete due to its long history. You can wander around the picturesque streets , visit the old market which is one of the most popular sights , visit the Venetian harbor to admire the lighthouse and enjoy a coffee at a cafeteria with wonderful view of the harbor.
